A Dream

Two years ago, I was just a high school student who had no other perspectives but to finish high school and start working. But for someone who since a child was amazed by art works, I realized my study of arts should not end at highs school. When junior year came, I started taking a photography class, which at the start was a frustrating experience. I was stunned when I first watched a picture being developed, to an obsession. Being a photographer makes one change the way things are seen. Everything can become a piece of art, an empty corner, a homeless person dressed in rages, an old abandoned object, even a trash barrel can be transformed through the lens of a camera into an impressive artwork.

Photography makes one go beyond the ordinary, experimenting and taking risks can result in interesting works, which is the reason why these eight pieces were chosen. My teacher was impressed when she saw the first solarized print, then each time I developed another one she would have a new favorite. Solarization transforms a print from only a simple picture into an interesting and fascinating work. It brings the picture to life, but at the same time makes it look unreal, giving a different contrast. These eight pieces show that a person does not need a computer or any other type of technological devise. These tools can be used, but the most essential of all, imagination, creativity, and the will to accomplish what is desired are the most necessary.

Different people have seen my work, including some with no art knowledge, others who are art majors and those who just have an interest in the arts. They all reacted favorably; because they realize that the work was not what they had expected. They were not only simple prints but ones with different contrasts. Although I enjoy the image that eyes can see, it can always go beyond the mundane. All that is needed is imagination to take one to see beyond random objects captured into a piece of paper.

I feel comfortable that I made the right choice not to let my education end with high school but having the desire to achieve more. I will not let obstacles get in my way. And even if I fail, I will still be proud, because I tried, and I realize failure comes when one stops trying.
