Sequence Rhythm, and Change was a project that involved approximately
120 students. Through visual art and music, students explored
the theme of sequence, rhythm, and change. They drew inspiration
from science, math, and literature to create music compositions
and visual art. The concepts of Sequence, Rhythm, and Change fall
across many domains from art to science. Sequence and rhythm provide
the structure by which we organize our lives and surroundings
while change is the force which pushes us forward.
For this project the school staff was joined by Artist Linda
Prince-Sneddon. Linda’s previous work has been experienced
at Kidspace at MassMoCa, North Adams, MA. She currently has an
installation at the Boston Children’s Museum and will create
an exhibit at the Philadelphia Children’s Museum next year.
She was an artist- in- residence for two weeks. Mrs. Price-Sneddon’s
teaching experience ranges from work wit the Boston Public Library
to Mentorship programs through the Boston Center for the Arts.
Both the music and the art started with very elementary materials
or ideas and created complex compositions. The art installation
was created with art materials generally associated with elementary
school art. Students twisted and weaved them into complex and
interesting forms which came together to create an even more intricate
visual experience.
Music students start with childhood melodies. Then using music
sequencing software they manipulated the songs by changing different
musical elements and then arranged them into even larger musical
compositions.
