BEACHMONT IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED CARNEGIE SCHOOL.

"Reaching for World Class Standards" is the motto of Revere's Beachmont School. Beachmont is among 101 middle schools throughout the United States chosen to participate in an initiative for systemic educational change funded by the Carnegie Corporation and administered by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The five year grant was originally written by Assistant Superintendent Paul Dakin. The teachers and staff have made a commitment to Carnegie's goals and have embraced the program with enthusiasm.

The Garfield School and the city's other sixth grades including the Whelan, McKinley, Lincoln, and Paul Revere Schools have also become "mini-middles" under the Carnegie Umbrella. Ninth graders at Revere High School are included too. The concept features teachers "teaming" together to service "clusters" of students. Each cluster includes about 100 students who share the same math, science, social studies, and language arts teachers. Emphasis is placed on integrated curriculum, interdisciplinary units, and a stronger interaction between students, staff, and parents.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CARNEGIE SCHOOL?

The centerpiece of the initiative is a lengthy school improvement self-study taken by all Garfield and Beachmont students and teachers. The findings provide detailed information regarding a variety of concerns and opinions about school environment, stress, academic performance, technology, and other issues. Teachers and staff use the results as a basis for creating systematic change in middle school curriculum and programs. The results of the self-study were presented to parents last spring and are available to the public.

In a recent interview, Mr. Lillo discussed several findings from the self-study. He was pleased to learn that 92% of students at the Beachmont and Garfield felt safe and were not bothered by gang violence. "This is a remarkably high percentage for an urban school, and we are very proud that we have been able to make a difference." Our MISSION 180 Zero Tolerance for Violence is a direct result of the Carnegie initiative.
